Whirl
switch
can a light switch encourage use through interation and form?
Design Goals
Before ideating, I created a quick moodboard to capture some styles and design details that are engaging and tactile.
Engaging Interaction
Unobtrusive
Ergonomic
this design had a simple, unobtrusive look to it and seemed engaging to use
Printing
After taking my 3D printer apart and adjusting some of the parts, I printed four different switches to physically test. With my final print, I sanded, painted it white, and finished it with a sealant.
Final Prototype Assembly
the print was thoroughly sanded, filled, spray painted white, and sealed
the ring was printed separately and glued to the face to ensure a smooth surface for rotation
the backpiece features a small hole and a recessed portion to fit the tack head without it protruding
I used a simple tack as a pin to hold the front and back together while allowing rotation
How It Works
The switch rotates clockwise and clicks into place every quarter with the serine, horizontal position being off and the vertical positions being on.
